Sailing
The sailing season at MYC typically starts around the end of February and finishes early November.
A full Sailing Programme is published at the end of each year detailing all the sailing and social events
for the forthcoming year. Depending on tide times, there is sailing most Saturdays and Sundays and during
the height of the season there is also ‘midweek’ sailing.
The organised sailing events involve handicap dinghy racing over set courses on the River Blackwater and
whilst the competition is keen, emphasis is placed on having fun no matter where you may finish.
A typical start line will include Lasers, Snipes, Hornets and 420's –
so it really doesn’t matter what class of boat you sail. There is a mixture of ‘one-off’ and ‘series’ races
throughout the season and prize giving takes place toward the end of the season in October / November.
Last year, thirty five trophies were presented at the annual dinner and dance and some of the winners are
pictured below.
For anyone new to sailing, help is always on hand in the dinghy park and the Snipe and Laser class have fleet
captains able to offer further advice if needed. For the more experienced and adventurous members there are
Open Meetings up and down the River Blackwater throughout the season. The Club also hosts the Snipe South
Eastern Championships which this year will be held in July when there will be a competitive weekend of
sailing and some great entertainment on the Saturday night.
